Estrangement Can Be Both Loss and Protection

People talk about estrangement as if it were a single story: the cold child, the impossible parent, the family that should have tried harder.
Lived estrangement is rarely that clean. It is often a long sequence of attempts — of shrinking, explaining, hoping, walking back in, walking back out. By the time distance becomes the arrangement, many people have already spent years trying to stay.
Protection and grief can occupy the same chest.
Protection is not the opposite of love. Sometimes it is what love looks like when it finally includes you.
